Q. Is pin removal surgery necessary after double-jaw surgery?

The pins used in surgery are made of biocompatible titanium, so they do not necessarily need to be removed and do not interfere with daily life at all.

However, pin removal surgery is necessary in rare cases, such as titanium allergy or inflammation around the pins.

Because facial pins may be visible on dental X-rays and facial CT scans, pin removal surgery may also be considered by those who do not wish for their history of double-jaw surgery to be disclosed.

Q. When is the best time to have pins removed?

It is recommended to plan pin removal approximately 6 months to 1 year or more after surgery.

If you are considering pin removal, it is advisable to have it done within 2 years after surgery whenever possible, as the pins and bone may become more firmly fused over time, making removal difficult.

Q. Will the pins cause problems if I need dental implants later?

Depending on the fixation method and pin location, they may occasionally interfere with future dental implant placement or bone grafting, but this is uncommon.

Q. Will they trigger an alarm when passing through airport security?

Airport security metal detectors do not detect implants or pins used in double-jaw surgery, so there is no need to worry.
