What Is Ambidextrous SMILE? Typically, right-handed surgeons operate on both the right and left eyes using their right hand. However, when operating on the left eye with the right hand, the patient’s nasal bridge may obstruct the entry path of the surgeon’s hand and surgical instruments. As a result, instruments may enter the incision at an angle, or unnecessary wrist rotation by the surgeon may place stress on the incision. This may also affect the precision of the lenticule separation and removal process. It uses a contact glass designed to match the curvature of the cornea to reduce pressure applied to the eye during surgery, and applies laser treatment for approximately 25 seconds per eye to create a lenticule within the cornea. The created lenticule is removed through a small incision of approximately 2 mm. Because no corneal flap is created, damage to the corneal surface and nerves is relatively limited. Compared with LASIK, it may involve less dry eye burden and allow for faster visual recovery. Comprehensive Preoperative Examination A comprehensive preoperative examination is conducted to evaluate the following: • Degree of myopia and astigmatism • Corneal thickness and shape • Risk of corneal ectasia • Pupil size • Dry eye status • Intraocular pressure and retinal condition • Expected correction amount and residual corneal thickness Based on the examination results, eligibility for SMILE surgery is determined. If corneal strengthening is considered necessary, it may be performed together with SMILE surgery. Surgery and Recovery If the examination results indicate that surgery is possible, both the examination and procedure may be performed on the same day. Rapid visual recovery may be expected after surgery, and most patients can resume light daily activities from the day after surgery.
