When the eyelid-opening muscles are weak, the eyes may appear heavy and strained, and one may develop a habit of furrowing the brows and forehead. This can cause the eyelids to droop and prevent the eyes from opening fully, partially covering the dark pupils and creating a sleepy appearance, as well as forehead wrinkles when opening the eyes.

In such cases, the procedure that corrects the eye shape by increasing the strength of the muscles that lift the eyelids is called ptosis correction surgery or eye shape correction surgery.

When the eyes are small and the eyelids are weak, double-eyelid surgery alone produces little change in eye size. Therefore, to create clearer eyes, it is recommended to combine eye shape correction with double-eyelid surgery. While considering the overall balance and harmony of the eyes and face, the patient's eye condition is thoroughly analyzed to select the appropriate surgical method, such as incisional or non-incisional techniques, according to the cause and eye structure.

For beautiful eyes, more than 80% of the dark pupil should be visible when the eyes are open.

In eyes with ptosis that require eye shape correction, more than one-third of the dark pupil is covered by the eyelid, creating a sleepy and tired appearance. Ptosis generally refers to when, while looking straight ahead, the distance between the center of the pupil and the upper eyelash line is 2 mm or less. Because there is insufficient strength to open the eyes, one may develop a habit of furrowing the forehead or raising the eyebrows to open the eyes. Uneven pupil exposure on each side may also result in asymmetrical eyes.

Depending on the severity of ptosis, it is classified as mild, moderate, or severe, and different surgical methods are used for each. If only simple double-eyelid surgery is performed in cases of ptosis, the ptosis may appear worse than before surgery; therefore, an accurate preoperative diagnosis based on the condition of the eyes is necessary.

For eyes in which the eyelids cover a large portion of the dark pupils when looking straight ahead, making them always appear sleepy, or for eyes that appear weak, appropriate eye shape correction surgery should be performed according to each type, considering both aesthetic and functional aspects, to create healthy and beautiful eye contours.
