Multifocal Intraocular Lenses Multifocal intraocular lenses are presbyopia-correcting lenses implanted after removal of the natural lens clouded by cataracts. Unlike monofocal lenses, which focus at only one distance, they are designed to provide vision across multiple ranges—from distance to intermediate and near vision—thereby reducing dependence on glasses after surgery. They may also be used in refractive lens exchange (RLE), a presbyopia-correcting procedure performed in patients without cataracts to correct presbyopia and refractive errors. Visual Ranges of Multifocal Intraocular Lenses • Distance: Driving, watching TV, outdoor activities, and viewing signs • Intermediate: Computer use, laptop use, viewing the vehicle dashboard, and cooking • Near: Using a smartphone, reading, viewing menus, and seeing small print The distances at which vision is clear and the degree of dependence on glasses may vary depending on the lens type and the individual condition of the eyes. How Multifocal Intraocular Lenses Work Multifocal intraocular lenses create multiple focal zones within the optical portion of the lens, distributing incoming light for distance, intermediate, and near vision. As the brain selects and adapts to the image needed at each distance, vision across different ranges becomes possible. Not all distances become perfectly clear immediately after surgery, and an adaptation period may be needed to adjust to the new visual system and light distribution. Types of Intraocular Lenses Trifocal Lenses These lenses provide separate focal points for distance, intermediate, and near vision. Extended Depth-of-Focus Lenses These lenses provide natural, continuous vision from distance to intermediate range. They may be considered for patients who place importance on night driving or the quality of distance vision, although reading glasses may be needed for small print. Hybrid Lenses These lenses are designed to combine the advantages of multifocal and extended depth-of-focus lenses, providing a broad range of vision from distance to near. Toric Lenses These are astigmatism-correcting lenses used for patients with corneal astigmatism. Multifocal or extended depth-of-focus functionality may be combined with astigmatism correction.
