Corneal Transplantation

When the cornea sustains functionally or structurally irreversible damage, it may become swollen or cloudy, turning white and reducing vision. In severe cases, it may also cause cosmetic concerns. In such cases, a surgery that replaces the damaged cornea with a clear cornea donated by another personis called corneal transplantation.

Penetrating Keratoplasty

This procedure transplants the full thickness of the cornea and is the method used in most cases.

Lamellar Keratoplasty

This procedure transplants only the affected layers on the front or back side of the cornea (endothelium).

Limbal Transplantation

The limbus is the area containing corneal epithelial stem cells and is located at the border between the black iris and the white of the eye. Limbal transplantation is a procedure that transplants this area.

What Is the Cornea?

The cornea is a transparent membrane covering the surface of the black pupil at the very front of the eye, protecting the eye and serving as a window that allows us to see objects.

Corneal Transplantation Procedure
